Grade 2
School Year 1993-1994

A narrative report card has been set up for Mark in order to inform all those concerned about Mark's progress since his inclusion into 2nd grade.

READING - Mark participates in reading group with 3 other students. He uses his Canon Communicator to answer questions and the other students help read his answers. He can answer some comprehension sentences with yes or no answers. At times, he is also able to give some one word answers to simple comprehension questions. He uses his finger with the help of Mrs. Leader as he reads. I believe he can read quite quickly and often understands what he is reading. He has proven he understands some reading skills, such as digraphs, short vowel sounds, context clues, and contractions. Mark stays on task in reading group for a good 15 minutes daily. Next quarter I will try to work more on developing more challenging comprehension questions to see if Mark will be able to answer them on his Canon.

MATH - It is difficult to assess Mark's mathematical abilities at this time. I often work one on one with him to see if he is able to count, add, subtract, graph and measure. Whenever I use manipulatives to assess these skills, Mark gets too easily distracted and would rather "filter" through the unifix cubes, jewels, pattern blocks and junk boxes. I've tried using beans and M&M's but Mark prefers to eat them rather than work with them. He participates in our calendar activities every morning and seems to understand the concept of place value. He has shown some success with addition and subtraction when Mrs. Leader and I use stickers with numbers on them. He can put the correct number sticker next to the facts that Mrs. Leader has written out for him. He has shown some success with math facts on the computer. He also does better with visual multiple choice answers rather than audio choice answers. Next quarter, we will try to come up with more successful ways to assess Mark's math abilities.

HANDWRITING - Mark has great difficulty with his fine motor skill at this time. I am not stressing handwiiting skills this quarter. At times, Mark will write on the blackboard to practice his letter and number writing. Mrs. Leader helps guide him. He seems to enjoy this activity.

SPELLING - Mark studies his spelling words weekly. He types out his spelling words on his Canon for our weekly spelling tests with great success. At times, he has typed out other words on his Canon that are spelled correctly as well. I believe he can spell many consonant-vowel-consonant words independently.

LANGUAGE SKILLS - Mark's language skills can not be determined at this time. It is my hope, as well as Mrs. Clement's hope, that we will be able to encourage and teach Mark to use either his Canon or facilitator board to express his wants and wishes to us as the year progresses.

SOCIAL STUDIES, SCIENCE AND HEAL TH - Mark works with Mrs. Leader in these subjects most of the time while the rest of the class usually work on projects or cooperative groups. He was given a test in Science on the Human Body and did quite well. He listens and seems to retain many facts from our class discussions in these subjects. I am confident he is learning many things in these areas.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION- Mark has difficulty participating with the class in PE. He does not participate in any group activity. At times, Mrs. Leader must actually move his body around to make him participate. He often shows great frustration in PE class. However, we are beginning to see some improvement in Mark's PE activities.

MUSIC - Mark loves Music. He claps to the beat and will play instruments if given the opportunity and help. He listens to and follows directions. Even though Mark cannot sing or play instruments on his own, he appears to understand and respond to whatever concepts he is learning for the day. Mrs. Washington believes music holds many aesthetic benefits for Mark.

ART ---Art is a positive experience for Mark. He participates well, although he consistently needs to play with a particular stuffed animal that Mrs. Scott has in there for decoration. He has a routine where he plays with the stuffed animal, then plays in sand or clay and then does an art activity with Mrs. Scott right with him. Mrs. Scott gave Mark an outstanding in art.

SOCIAL AND WORK HABITS - Mark still shows inconsistency in his behavior throughout the day. We will all be working as a team to help Mark participate fully in the second grade activities to the best of his abilities. I am encouraged and I do see growth in Mark's ability to cooperate with all those who work with him. I would like to see Mark try to stay on task for longer periods of time. He seems to work well for 15 minutes at a time before needing a break. Mark's classmates are happy to have him in class and many have become his friends. I have begun to see Mark interact (for example, giving a classmate a high five or stroking his cheek) with some classmates especially as he sits down at story time. I would also like to thank Mrs. Hartmann for all the support, knowledge and encouragement she has given to all of us. Her patience with this new situation and her gentle guidance encourages us all to do our best for Mark.
